Constantly retrieving latest information....
Published on May 2, 2009 By Kevin_C In Stardock Support General

For the past 3 days, maybe more I don't run Impulse all that often, whenever I try and run impulse it never manages to "retrieve latest information". The spinner in the top right of the Impulse window just spins endlessly. Since I'm posting this from the same machine and I can get to the internet and play online games etc, I'm assuming my connection is fine. WHen I go to the Impulse help menu and try the Diagnose connection issues link I get what looks to me like a successful result:

**Resolving dl1.impulsedriven.com**
38.98.152.152

**Resolving stardock.cachefly.net**
205.234.175.175

**Retrieving from dl1.impulsedriven.com**
Success!

**Proxy information**
Using default proxy settings

**Checking Service: EventSystem**
Service is running

**Checking Service: RpcSs**

**Checking Service: DcomLaunch**

When I first launched Impulse this morning it found an update and successfully downloaded and installed it and then went right back to the endless spinner.. However, looking in the error log, I find:

-- [5/2/2009 5:32:21 PM] ----------------------------------------------------

Could this be the issue? Do I need to download/install the latest version from somewhere?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

UPDATE 1, I've just gotten a different error. Can anyone in the know verify if there are server issues:

Context:    Updating ApplicationList XML: mycolors Public
Message:    Server problem or connection issue
Build #:    1260
Exception:    The operation has timed out.
Stack Trace:
   at System.Net.ConnectStream.Read(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 size)
   at az.a(UpdateParams A_0, Boolean A_1)

Could this be an attempt to update the available myColors themes? WHatever it is it seems to be killing the whole process.

There used to be an option in Impulse to refresh XML data. I've just had a look but can't see where it is

Try clicking on the orb and then Preferences. You will see a "Reset Data" button, try a reset.. You may need to disconnect from the internet to do this, since Impulse won't let you access Preferences before it logs on. Reset, reconnect to the net then launch Impulse.

Tried this, still not what I would call working. Now I'm getting:

I've never really had problems with Impulse until now but this is about ready to send me into a profanity laden tirade the likes of which the WC forums may be ill-prepared... Maybe now would be a good time to take up yoga or meditation of some sort..

Thanks for helping guys, if you have any more ideas please share and I'll give them a shot!

Maybe uninstall Impulse and reinstall?

Maybe uninstall Impulse and reinstall?

Yup, that's what I ended up doing. It *seems* to be working now, the endless spinner is no more and I can see the new Ankh MyColors theme so it is apparently connecting and doing its thing successfully. I'm still getting XML version errors as well as server connection errors in the log file but those may not be germane to the real problem.

Thanks again to everyone who offered suggestions and help!!

A pleasure, Kevin.

About the XML stuff...definitely open a ticket at SD support if you haven't done so already....and give them this thread's url.
